What do you do in your role?

Senior Research and Policy Officer within the Professional Standards team, I am responsible for developing and delivering policy projects across the organisation and for developing our work with patients.

My recent focus has been on developing policy around Artificial Intelligence (AI), and thinking about how developments in AI are impacting on osteopathy and how we respond to these as a regulator. I also help to run our Patient Involvement Forum and ensure that forum members’ views play an important role in the policy development process.

Other areas of my work including international engagement around the recognition of UK osteopathic qualifications and responding to osteopaths’ queries about how to apply the Osteopathic Practice Standards to some of the everyday challenges they face in their practice.

What opportunities does your role provide?

My role is diverse and lets me dive into many exciting aspects of policy work. Working in a smaller organisation means I get to be involved in the whole policy development process – starting with an idea, right through to delivery and then checking how it's making a difference.

My work is also collaborative. I get to work with different teams, other regulators and members of the public, including patients. Through my work running our Patient Involvement Forum, I get to run focus groups with patients to gather their views on different topics or projects we are running.

What I particularly like about the GOsC is that I have the time and support to build my expertise in different policy areas. For example, from a limited knowledge base, I have developed my understanding of AI to the point that I am now confident in presenting policy options around our regulatory approach to the GOsC’s Policy and Education Committee.

What is it like working for the GOsC?

I really enjoy working at the GOsC because it gives me the opportunity to get involved in many different areas of work – opportunities that wouldn’t usually be available if I was working at a larger organisation.

The team is really supportive and friendly. Whether that be to support my own professional development or to discuss any problems or issues - the team is there to help.

Everyone at the GOsC also brings a diverse range of skills and experience, which really helps when talking about a tricky policy problem.

What would it surprise people to know about you?

I love travelling, seeing different places and experiencing different cultures. I have also visited almost every continent, except for North America, so hoping to tick that one off my bucket list at some point.

I am also Australian, although I have been living in the UK since 2008. Despite this I have been reliably informed that I still have an accent!
