Banye Kanon
Banye Kanon joined GOsC as the Senior Quality Assurance Officer in June 2022.
What do you do in your role
I am part of the Professional Standards team supporting our educational providers in ensuring osteopaths meet our Graduate outcomes for Pre-Registration Education & Training and Osteopathic Practice Standards contributing to our over arching objective of patient safety and public protection.
One of the first major projects I worked on when joining, was the designing and developing the Quality Assurance Risk-based framework. This was developed to outline the proactive measures in place to mitigate risks and the kind of evidence that would be requested from each provider for analysis when a risk to the Standards for Education and training have been identified.
Maintaining and continuously improving our quality assurance mechanisms is a key part of my role, ensuring our Osteopathic Educational Institutions continue to uphold our Standards for Education and training. Ways in which we do this is through reviewing our Student Fitness to Practice and Management of Health & Disability guides. This is important in order to ensure that our guidance remains relevant and continues to meet the diverse needs of our educators and students. This process involved engaging with our sector at all levels being educators, students and patients. This was done through questionnaires and focus groups in order to directly hear the voices of our key stakeholders.
My role also requires me to deliver and enhance our quality assurance mechanisms, for example our annual reporting process and recognised qualification visits. Both seek to ensure the Standards for Education are being upheld in our institutions.
Stakeholder engagement is an important aspect of my work. In all areas of quality assurance, we engage with stakeholders at all levels to use their feedback to enhance our quality assurance processes and inform a lot of the work that we do.
What opportunities does your role provide?
I feel I have quite a rewarding and fulfilling role. I get the chance to engage with many people within our sector and deliver effective solutions and processes to meet their needs. The reward comes from seeing the impact of changing and developing the quality of education and enhancing students learning experience.
What is it like working for GOSC?
I have enjoyed my time working at GOsC over the past two years. Senior management have created an inclusive environment where constructive challenge is supported. Support is not only there in a professional sense, but there is a strong ethos and care for successful personal lives as well.
What would it surprise people to know about you?
I was born and raised in London, but have a second language in French which comes from my French West African background. I am a dad to a beautiful little girl who is turning 6 in the next few weeks as I am writing this. My main passion outside of my work and child is sports, playing semi-professional football for nine years and now the occasional five aside game. I am a keen gym goer and you can find me in the gym at least four times a week pushing my body to its limits
