The General Osteopathic Council removes Shamim Akhtar from its Register of osteopaths

The Council found that Mr Akhtar had provided a false medical degree certificate when he applied to study osteopathy at the London College of Osteopathic Medicine (LCOM). Mr Akhtar had used the qualification from LCOM to gain entry to the Register of osteopaths.

The Council decided that Mr Akhtar’s entry in the Register was therefore fraudulent.

The Council also found that Mr Akhtar falsely claimed to be registered with the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council when he applied to join the Register of osteopaths. 

The Council took the view that Mr Akhtar’s conduct had constituted a series of steps which represented serious and premeditated acts of dishonesty. It decided that Mr Akhtar’s conduct was fundamentally incompatible with the high standards of integrity and honesty required of osteopaths.

The Council concluded that Mr Akhtar should be removed from the Register for the protection of the public and the wider public interest, and ordered the Registrar to remove Mr Akhtar from the Register.

Mr Akhtar is now unable to practise as an osteopath.

He has until 31 December to appeal the Council’s decision and remains suspended pending an appeal.
