GOsC publishes fitness to practise report for 2022-23

The Fitness to Practise Annual Report includes details of the sanctions given by our Professional Conduct Committee following the fitness to practise hearings that took place in the year up to 31 March 2023.

The Professional Conduct Committee hears cases concerning unacceptable professional conduct, professional incompetence and relevant criminal convictions. If the Committee finds any such case ‘well founded’, it must impose a sanction on the osteopath.

As part of the GOsC’s programme to continually enhance its fitness to practise processes, this year’s report details a number of updates, including:

• a review of our Whistleblowing Handling Concerns Policy to ensure its continued relevance and accessibility
• our joint webinar with the General Chiropractic Council about hearings to encourage interprofessional collaboration and learning
• publication of another Insights on Fitness to Practise bulletin

The Independent Support Service, run by the charity Victim Support, is also highlighted in the report. It is a free and confidential service made available by the GOsC to all osteopaths and other witnesses going through a fitness to practise investigation.

Dealing with issues involving osteopaths’ fitness to practise is an integral part of the GOsC’s duty to regulate the profession and protect the public and the profession’s reputation.

The annual fitness to practise reports provide guidance to osteopaths on the high standards of conduct and practice required to maintain registration.
