COVID-19: If you have been identified as a close contact

We have recently had a number of queries raised with us about what actions osteopaths need to take if they have been identified as a close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

If you have not tested positive yourself, but have been informed that you have been in close contact with someone who has, you should follow the relevant guidance in England, Northern Ireland (currently under review), Scotland or Wales.

In many circumstances you will be exempt from self-isolation as set out in the above national guidance.

However, the important consideration is patient safety.

You should keep your risk assessment during the period you have been notified under review, for example: 

• be attentive to the development of COVID symptoms (which require you to self-isolate)
• consider additional testing (being aware of requirements in your area)
• be aware of the risks for patients and be able to communicate these appropriately particularly for vulnerable and immunosuppressed patients 

You can seek further advice from the Institute of Osteopathy (the professional membership body) and your local public health team.
