Findings of equality, diversity and inclusion pilot published

16 March 2023

The GOsC 2022 pilot gathered views from osteopaths on the questions and messaging we hope to use to collect information on, and monitor, diversity in the osteopathic profession.

Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Framework 2021-24 explains how we plan to embrace inclusivity, value diversity and promote equity, for example by improving the systematic monitoring of diversity data across the organisation.

As part of this, we launched a profession-wide equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) survey in February 2022 to pilot the questions we might use to gather diversity data. We also held online focus groups with osteopaths to gather views on the messaging we were considering using when asking the profession for this data.

A report on our findings and recommendations from this pilot is now available. Findings include that while the majority of respondents felt respected by their colleagues, less than half felt that the osteopathic profession values diversity.

The four recommendations for the work of GOsC across the osteopathic profession relate to:

  • the collection of EDI data
  • our work with osteopathic education providers to ensure high quality education for students
  • our efforts to ensure our communications and engagement with the profession is open and inclusive
  • the provision of resources on equality and diversity, to support continuing professional development

Over the next year, we aim to share what we are doing to progress each of these recommendations.
