Remembering Dr Joan Martin
23 March 2023
It is with the greatest sadness that we share the news that our colleague and friend, Dr Joan Martin, former Council member for the General Osteopathic Council, has passed away.
Joan retired a year ago after 8 years as a Lay Member of Council and a representative on Council from Northern Ireland. She was also a long standing member of the Policy and Education Committee (PEC).
Joan will be remembered, not only for her supportive, insightful and practical approach to work and life, but specifically for her valuable contributions to the work of GOsC’s Council and for her charitable contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr Bill Gunnyeon, Chair of Council, said: ‘Joan was always thinking of others. She brought her expertise and wisdom to the deliberations of Council, and her commitment to and knowledge of healthcare education proved invaluable to the work of the PEC.
‘She was both admired and respected by all those with whom she worked and I know that many of us regarded her as a friend. I greatly appreciated the support she gave me throughout my 4 years as Chair of the PEC and subsequently in my role as Council Chair, where I often benefitted from her wise counsel.
‘It was a huge privilege for me to have had the opportunity to work with Joan.’
Matthew Redford, GOsC's Chief Executive and Registrar, said: ‘On behalf of everyone at GOsC, I would like to express my sincere sadness at this news, but also gratitude for the exceptional contributions of Joan to our organisation and to our work.
‘Joan made a wonderful contribution to the work of Council. I remember Joan for her directness, integrity, and humour which she brought to every meeting.
‘I join my colleagues in sharing our deepest sympathies with her loved ones at this sad time. Joan will be greatly missed.’
