Our statement about recent violent public disorder
8 August 2024
The General Osteopathic Council stands together with other healthcare regulators and health organisations against racism, Islamophobia and antisemitism, violence, hate speech and discrimination.
We are shocked and saddened by the recent violent public disorder across the UK and acknowledge the impact this will have on osteopaths and patients.
We know that osteopaths will be looking to keep their patients, themselves and their practices safe, and we recognise also that many will be working on their own. Our staff are here to provide support and we encourage osteopaths to contact us if they are in difficulty or would like to talk through any aspect at this time. We will do our best to help and signpost to suitable guidance or organisations that can offer the help that is needed.
For patients: osteopaths are expected to comply with the Osteopathic Practice Standards which include practising in accordance with equality and anti-discrimination laws, treating patients fairly and recognising diversity and individual values. Osteopaths are also required to ensure that their beliefs and values do not impact patient care.
Everyone at GOsC is committed to promoting equity, valuing diversity and embracing inclusivity throughout our work, and to supporting osteopaths to do the same in their practices.
