New guidance for students on professional behaviours and fitness to practise is published

12 February 2025

Our new guidance, informed by feedback during our consultation earlier this year, aims to support students to develop professional behaviours and establish their fitness to practise during their studies.

Students must demonstrate professional values and behaviours to meet the Graduate Outcomes and be awarded a recognised qualification.

The guidance is intended for use by students, osteopathy education providers and the GOsC, and aims to support students to develop professional behaviours and establish their fitness to practise during their studies as well as explaining the role of GOsC and osteopathic education providers in supporting students’ development of these behaviours and values.

Key updates to the guidance, we have:

  • Combined updated guidance into one document aimed at both students and education providers.
  • Increased clarity around the focus on professional behaviours and health and disability issues.
  • Ensured the guidance reflects the Osteopathic Practice Standards, with examples of what is expected, as well as types of behaviours which might raise concerns in relation to these.
  • Reviewed the procedural section regarding the management of fitness to practice cases.

In 2024 we welcomed views and feedback from osteopaths, students and educators during our three-month consultation to help inform this updated version of the guidance

The guidance is available in Welsh and English on our website.
