Interim guidance on the use of Artificial Intelligence in osteopathic practice published

12 May 2025

Our guidance addresses the rapidly evolving use of AI technologies in healthcare and will be reviewed regularly.

Our guidance aims to help osteopaths understand how the Osteopathic Practice Standards (OPS) apply when using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to support their practice. Osteopaths are expected to keep the safety of their patients at the heart of their decisions if using AI.

We want to support those osteopaths who are already using AI in their practice or who may be considering using it to maintain high standards. Included in the guidance are key principles drawn from the OPS that osteopaths should consider with the use of AI:

  • Accountability: Osteopaths remain fully responsible for clinical decision-making even when using AI tools
  • AI literacy: Practitioners must understand the capabilities, limitations, and potential biases of any AI tools they use
  • Transparency and consent: Patients must be informed when AI is used in their care and have their preferences respected
  • Patient safety and confidentiality: Data protection requirements apply if AI is used with patient information, and osteopaths must have a process to allow their patients to raise concerns about the use of AI, especially if it impacts on their safety.

Matthew Redford, Chief Executive of GOsC, said: ‘As AI becomes increasingly integrated into healthcare settings, osteopaths have been thinking about how their existing professional obligations under the Osteopathic Practice Standards apply when using these new technologies. Our interim guidance reinforces that while AI can be a valuable tool, osteopaths remain fully accountable for all aspects of patient care.’

We will review and update this guidance on a regular basis in response to feedback and any future developments in the use of AI. We welcome feedback from osteopaths, patients, education providers and other partners across the osteopathic profession. You can contact us at: standards@osteopathy.org.uk.
