GOsC launches registration appeals consultation

22 November 2013

The GOsC is consulting on new guidelines and procedures relating to appeals against registration decisions.

GOsC consults on Registration Appeals Guidelines and Procedures

The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) today opened a consultation on new guidelines and procedures relating to appeals about decisions on registration.

Certain registration decisions made by the GOsC Registrar can be appealed. The types of decisions that can be appealed are set out in section 29 of the Osteopaths Act 1993. The procedure for considering appeals is set out in the Osteopaths Act and also in rules made under that Act.

Although appeals are made to the whole Council, the Council has delegated the hearing of individual appeals to a Registration Appeals Committee.

The new Registration Appeals Guidelines and Procedures set out:

  • the terms of reference for this Committee
  • its constitution and quorum
  • the requirement to have a legal assessor present to advise the Committee
  • the requirement for the Committee to give reasons for its decisions.

The Guidelines and Procedures Document also sets out the procedures to be followed at the hearing.

Views are being sought from osteopaths, other osteopathic organisations, patients, the public, and other regulators, amongst other key stakeholders.
