GOsC announces new appointments to statutory committees

1 April 2017

The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) is pleased to announce the appointment of 14 new members to three of its statutory committees.

Investigating Committee

The following individuals have been appointed to the Investigating Committee for a four-year term:

  • Sue Gallone (lay)
  • Catherine Hamilton-Plant (osteopath)
  • Linda Hawkins (lay)
  • Debbie Watt (osteopath)
  • Tamsyn Webb (osteopath)

The Investigating Committee carries out the initial investigation of a complaint against an osteopath when there is an allegation of unacceptable professional conduct, professional competence or matters relating to ill health.

Professional Conduct and Health Committees

The following individuals have been appointed to the Professional Conduct and Health Committees:

  • Tom Bedford (osteopath)
  • Alastair Cannon (lay)
  • Colin Childs (lay)
  • Kenneth McLean (osteopath)
  • Lakshmi Ramakrishnan (lay)

The Professional Conduct Committee hears cases concerning serious unacceptable conduct, incompetence or criminal convictions. If the Committee finds any such case proved, it imposes an appropriate sanction on the osteopath. The Health Committee considers cases where an osteopath is alleged to be in poor physical or mental health. Appropriate action is taken in the interests of the public and the osteopath.

Policy Advisory Committee

The GOsC has appointed four external members to its Policy Advisory Committee:

  • Dr Marvelle Brown (lay)
  • Bob Davies (osteopath)
  • Professor Raymond Playford (lay)
  • Nick Woodhead (osteopath)

The Policy Advisory Committee, created in 2016, has replaced other committees to be a single body providing GOsC Council with input to policy discussions across all the GOsC’s activities – including undergraduate education and registration, practice standards, CPD and fitness to practise policy. The Committee also undertakes the statutory functions that are reserved to the Education Committee as laid down in the Osteopaths Act, primarily around recognition of qualifications.

  • setting, maintaining and developing standards of osteopathic practice and conduct;
  • assuring the quality of osteopathic education;
  • ensuring continuing professional development;
  • helping patients with concerns or complaints about an osteopath.
