GOsC meets all Standards of Good Regulation for twelfth year running

29 June 2022

The General Osteopathic Council has met all the PSA’s Standards of Good Regulation for the twelfth year in succession; continuing to be the only health and care regulator with that record.

The Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (PSA) oversees the performance of ten health and social care regulators and, in its latest annual performance review, has found that the GOsC has met all Standards of Good Regulation for the twelfth year running.

Chair of Council, Dr Bill Gunnyeon, said: ‘We are delighted with the outcome of the Performance Review report, which once again provides independent evidence that the GOsC continues to deliver high quality regulation, ensuring the protection of the public and supporting the development of the profession.

‘This success has been the result of the dedication and hard work of the entire GOsC team to whom a huge debt of gratitude is owed. I would also wish to express my appreciation for the work of my fellow Council members who have continued to work in a constructive and supportive way with our Chief Executive and Senior Management Team.

Dr Bill Gunnyeon was keen to emphasise: ‘It is of course essential that we do not become in any way complacent and continually strive to maintain and further enhance our performance. As a reflective regulator we have, over the past year, been undertaking work to review and assess our own performance, to help inform and shape our future strategic direction. The development of our new strategy will be a key focus for Council over the next 18 months and I look forward to sharing further details as this work progresses.’

Chief Executive and Registrar, Matthew Redford, commented: ‘Our regulatory approach is centred on partnership, working with osteopaths, patients and other stakeholders. I am pleased to see this reflected in the Performance Review report and that GOsC continues to maintain our proud record of passing all Standards of Regulation. I am especially proud of the fact that the PSA have identified the work we have done, and continue to do, to meet our ongoing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.’

The PSA has 18 Standards of Good Regulation which cover the core functions of the regulator and include a focus on equality, diversity and inclusion; ensuring that relevant learning from one part of the business is applied to others; and that the regulator consults with all relevant stakeholders.
