Professor Deborah Bowman

Professor Deborah Bowman is a GOsC lay member of Council and Chair of the Policy and Education Committee.

Deborah is a Professor of Bioethics and Clinical Ethics and Deputy Principal (Institutional Affairs) at St George's, University of London. Deborah’s academic interests concern the application of ethics to clinical practice, public involvement in ethical debate, and healthcare regulation. She has been published widely and participated in many projects in healthcare ethics. In 2016, Deborah was awarded an MBE for Services to Medical Ethics.

Deborah is an experienced senior leader, with an interest in organisational culture which prompted her to train as a mediator, specialising in healthcare. She has held a range of public service and board roles. Currently, Deborah’s portfolio includes serving as Chair for the General Medical Council’s review of its Consent Guidance and as a Non-Executive Director of St George’s and South West London Mental Health Trust.

Deborah also works as a broadcaster, particularly for BBC radio; most recently writing and presenting ‘Patient Undone’ and a fourth series of ‘Test Case’.
