In order to practise osteopathy lawfully in the UK, osteopaths must acquire professional indemnity insurance with a minimum cover of £2.5 million.
Professional indemnity insurance does not have to be purchased in the UK. You should seek advice from insurance intermediaries about insurance that is suitable for your needs and complies with the Professional Indemnity Insurance Rules 1998.
If you are insured with Balens, Towergate MIA or the British Osteopathic Association (BOA) they will confirm cover directly with us; if not, a copy of your insurance certificate should be sent to the Registration Department.
You should communicate directly with such insurance intermediaries. In the UK, they include the following:
| Company | Telephone | Website / email |
|---|---|---|
| Balens Insurance Brokers | 01684 580 771 | www.balens.co.uk |
| British Osteopathic Association | 01582 488 455 | www.osteopathy.org/O733VG63926 |

| Towergate Medical Insurance Agency (MIA) | 01438 739 777 | www.towergate.co.uk |
If you are a practising healthcare professional registered with an appropriate regulatory body and your existing insurance meets the requirements above, you may not need to obtain separate cover for osteopathy. Please refer to your indemnity insurer for further advice.
