Academic requirements for entry are stipulated by the training institutions - contact the individual colleges for details. Basic academic requirements generally include five GCSE passes (grade A-C or SCE equivalent, including English and Maths, with two good pass grades at A-level or three Highers - preferably in chemistry or physics, and biology or human biology).

Entry requirements for mature students are more flexible, but you may be required to complete an access course prior to entering the accredited degree programme.

Along with an interest in science and medicine, you will need to be sympathetic, tactful, reassuring and a good listener. Osteopaths also rely on good observational skills, sound judgement and the ability to give clear explanations and advice. You should also be physically fit.

Operating in the private sector will also require basic business skills, including some knowledge of accounting, marketing and the management of premises.

GOsC registration requirements include a medical certificate of fitness and a declaration of any spent or unspent convictions. Osteopathic training institutions may therefore require a Criminal Records Bureau clearance on application.
