General Osteopathic Council

Appointments

The recruitment and appointment of the 14 Council members is carried out for the GOsC by the Appointments Commission, an independent organisation which answers to the Secretary of State.  At least one member is appointed from each of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Applicants are assessed against agreed competences and criteria developed by the GOsC Governance Working Group and approved by representatives of the British Osteopathic Association, osteopathic educational institutions and regional osteopathic societies.

All Council members are expected to observe the Seven Principles of Public Life as set out by the Nolan Committee: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

The Appointments Commission is also responsible for the recruitment and appointment of members of the Fitness to Practise Committees and the external members of the Education Committee.
